“Airegin” is “Nigeria” spelled backwards. Miles Davis’ 1954 album *Bags’ Groove* featured this and two other Sonny Rollins tunes – “Oleo” and “Doxy” - that became standards. While it begins like a minor blues, "Airegin" morphs into a lopsided 36-bar form and includes plenty of harmonic material to have fun with. You might hear other Sonny Rollins’ standards called more often but this one is worth learning just for the melody. Check out Tito Puente’s Salsa version!
