Ornithology / How High The Moon

[Bennie Harris Benny Harris Charlie Parker Morgan Lewis]

Ornithology: This bebop standard which borrows the changes from “How High The Moon” was recorded by Charlie Parker more than 40 times – a lot of them bootleg recordings of live performances. Always a fun to tune to play at tempo, “Ornithology” is one of the first bebop tunes you should learn. The changes are logical and easy to memorize – have fun playing along with this bebop version here! How High The Moon: First composed in 1940 for Broadway, “How High The Moon” eventually found its way into the jazz repertoire through the likes of Benny Goodman and Stan Kenton. There is also a famous recording of Les Paul and Mary Ford, which appealed to a crossover audience. Definitely a jam session standard, it’s a great vehicle for improvisation and lends perfectly to a bebop vocabulary.
