My Funny Valentine

[Lorenz Hart Richard Rodgers]

“My Funny Valentine” is one of the most recorded jazz ballads of the 20th century. It’s equally associated with Chet Baker and Miles Davis and they’re both responsible for it becoming a mainstream jazz standard. The descending bassline below the minor chord is a key feature used critically in a couple other standards too. The bridge shifts to the relative major and the main theme recaps beautifully in the last 12 bars bringing a wonderful climax to the tune. This is a standard worth getting into – enjoy playing along with the straight-16th R&B version here.
